The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas…

May 20, 2007

leatherlady.jpgWe have seen so much sun in the past couple weeks, I couldn’t resist mentioning it. I even had to start wearing sun screen. I can hear some of you saying already, “BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR FACE?!! You’re just starting now? UVA rays can get you through your car’s windshield.” Easy. Calm down people. I lived in Tucson for 11 years and I do not want a face that looks like a baseball glove from the times when Sammy Sosa wasn’t juiced. I wear at least SPF 15 on my face every day. It was just that more skin was exposed to the sun than usual. It was sunny and 80 last Tuesday; irresistible. Seattle is a place where people have “dress” fleece for crying our loud and the weather requires a lot of waterproof-breathable gear. The majority of my skin has not seen sun in months. Trust me, one kind of cancer in my lifetime is PLENTY. ¡No más, por favor! Here’s Adjuvant Therapy: Week Two…

1. Full week of radiation under my belt (literally and figuratively).

2. Second dose of Cisplatin proved to be trickier for both veins and stomach, but I still came out ahead.

3. Coached Eastlake girls again…so close for one team…they lost 6-7,6-7 for a state berth.

4. Chemo brain has proven to be beneficial on the tennis court…who needs to think when your reflexes still work!

5. Went to Tutta Bella for the first time…pretty darn good but nothing like taking a train from Roma-Napoli for the sole purpose of pizza off Via Tribunali.(pictures on flickr)

6. Got a hair cut (yes I still have hair and should keep it); first one since before surgery…thank you Sonja Olsen!

Chemo Two is Through! (but was there any puking?)

katzencontent.jpgSheesh. This is hard work taking in thousands of dollars of poison and making every day FRYday :)

Not to brag, but week one was a cinch. Week two could prove otherwise. I had a very productive chemo morning; making myself a latte on the Rancilio, going in for my sizzle-session, ate a healthy breakfast, went for a walk, took a quick nap, helped a neighbor with a cell phone activation, and went for my cocktail: the Cosmoplatinum. (Scott is concurrently brewing an IPA called “Radialetion”.) They got my IV started late(a first-timer had a reaction to Taxol but it turned out fine for her after all) and despite the fact that I have “good” veins, they roll over like Fido making it hard to keep the line in the vein. Fourth time was a charm and away we went. This week I skipped the Benadryl drip and took a pill instead which means I could read a bit. The Cisplatin went in, no prob! 500 mg/hour. Scott came at got me at 5 and home we went. Once at home, I made a bee-line for the bedroom. I was not feeling anywhere as good as I did last week. I slept/laid in bed until 8pm and somewhere in there I stumbled to my pill stash and found a Compazine…just in enough time. My mind and stomach were having an Iron Chef-style battle royale. My mind was Morimoto and my stomach was the challenger. Morimoto won! I even rallied to have an English muffin and some yogurt for dinner and watched a Tivoed, The Riches.

Our Readers Are Sick Bastards

This picture tells a story, eh? We thought our readers were tuning in to monitor Beth’s progress against cancer. We can’t reveal absolute traffic figures as they are trade secrets, but the directional guidance from this graph tells it all – you are all a bunch of sicko porn-hounds!

What really concerns me is that the audience is mostly friends and family and the apex correlates with the story about Big Black Butt. I had no idea the ladies from the tennis club fancied such eclectic erotica. It makes one wonder whether there will be any salad tossing (mp3) at their Memorial Day picnics…

The Week in Review: Happy Mother’s Day!

May 13, 2007

bw-daisy.jpgSome might think that I may harbor some bitterness towards cancer and life itself, or the fact that I might not ever celebrate a “real” Mother’s Day…not really. Cancer, quite frankly, can kiss my ass right on that daisy tattoo of mine. (I bet some of you didn’t know about that one; tennis ball in the center of the daisy to boot.) Plus the Fab Five are on their way to Reno on Monday; first-class liquid nitrogen tank. Anyway, here are some highlights from Adjuvant Therapy: Week One

1. Cisplatin went well…anti-nausea drugs are working and I am eating essentially what I feel like.

*tiny bit of tinnitus, metallic taste in mouth, difficulty typing at first, major sensitivity to sunlight and dry mouth.

2. Coaching tennis. My girls from Eastlake are the best and I love the fact that I am able to coach them at Kingco.

3. Taking morning walks and hitting Denali Fitness in the evening, with Scott, trying to stick to a schedule.

4. Played tennis on Saturday…my upper half is a bit ahead of my lower half (legs kind of wobbly) but haven’t served better in months!

5. Acupuncture is going well and Dr. Hu, of the Bellevue Acupuncture Clinic, is very supportive.

6. Radiation has not started, but I am Sharpied up (fields drawn on me) and ready to get on with the getting on.

7. Saturday night I had (shhhh) 2 glasses of really good Rioja and yummy flank steak. A girl’s gotta keep her iron up!

8. To all of you I saw/heard from during the week, thanks for all the support. You make my life seem normal…er…regular?!!

One Down, and Five to Go. Oh and it was our 9th anniversary!

hurdle-race.jpgFear of the unknown has been the biggest hurdle for me get over. And today was yet another hurdle to navigate. My first chemo did not go poorly and I was only there for 4 hours this time. I have been told that the infusions go faster as you go along. It wasn’t too bad and the liquid Benadryl hit me like I had just beer-bonged a six-pack…not that I would EVER know how that feels. This being, we must keep in mind, that I have no cumulative effect going on and no radiation going on yet either. I know at one point there is a VERY good chance it will suck royally. But for now, with my arsenal of anti-nausea drugs (Zofran, Dexamethsone, Compazine-oral and suppository, and Emend Pack), I am dealing.
